Reading the Marking on a Glove: What the Prints Mean

Several details appear on the back of the hand and on the label of a protective glove. They say who made it, what size it is and what it protects against. This guide shows how to read them.

The typical details

General overview; the data sheet, instructions for use and the labelling on the glove are authoritative.

How to check a glove on delivery

  • Do the product number and size match the order?
  • Is the symbol for the required type of protection present, and does the code match the data sheet?
  • Are the instructions for use enclosed or requested?
  • For chemical protection: do the code letters match the substance in the safety data sheet?

Why name and address appear on the product

The manufacturer's name and address are part of traceability: market surveillance authorities should be able to reach the responsible party quickly. According to the European Commission's Blue Guide, the details appear on the product or, where that is not possible, on the packaging or in an accompanying document. The address must name a single point at which the manufacturer can be contacted. In addition, a type, batch, serial or model number must allow the product to be identified; for Hi5 that is the product number. Source: Blue Guide 2022, section 4.2.2. If addresses in documents differ, see Certificate with a new address.

If a symbol is missing on the glove, the data sheet does not name the feature. You can see all the symbols of the Hi5 gloves in the knowledge base on symbols.
