Chemical-Resistant Gloves for Sulphuric Acid 96%: Tested to EN ISO 374-1
Sulphuric acid 96% is test chemical L of EN ISO 374-1. According to the data sheet, 6 Hi5 gloves are tested against it: HI551, HI552, HI553, HI554, HI555, HI556. The test applies to the substance under laboratory conditions and does not replace the choice based on the safety data sheet and risk assessment.

What the code letter L means
Three or more letters appear under the flask symbol on the glove. The letter L shows that the glove was tested against sulphuric acid 96% and met the requirement of the standard. For the type, the number of substances tested counts: type A at least six, type B at least three, type C at least one. How to read the marking is explained in the guide Chemical-resistant gloves: reading EN ISO 374-1 correctly.
Tested Hi5 gloves
| Product | Type | Code letters | Material, coating | Sizes |

What to look at when choosing
- The test uses the pure substance in the stated concentration at room temperature. Mixtures, higher temperatures, mechanical stress and material thickness change the breakthrough time.
- Section 8 of the safety data sheet for your substance states the glove requirement. It takes precedence over industry experience.
- Check for holes, tears and swelling before every use; change damaged gloves immediately.
- Chemical-resistant gloves belong to PPE category III. Instructing employees is mandatory.
German workplace exposure limit (AGW) for sulphuric acid
- German workplace exposure limit (AGW)
- 0.1 mg/m³ (inhalable fraction)
- Peak limitation
- 1(I)
- Origin of the value
- DFG (MAK Commission), EU
- Source
- TRGS 900, version of 5 June 2026
TRGS 900 (version of 5 June 2026) gives a German workplace exposure limit (AGW) of 0.1 mg/m³ (inhalable fraction) for sulphuric acid (CAS 7664-93-9). This means sulphuric acid in the air, not the test liquid “Sulphuric acid 96%”.
Peak limitation 1(I): the 15-minute average must not exceed the AGW. Category I stands for substances whose local effect determines the limit.
The AGW assesses the air at the workplace. It does not say whether a glove is sufficient on skin contact; for that, the test result of the glove, the safety data sheet and your risk assessment count.
- Marked “Y”: when the AGW (and, where set, the biological limit value) is met, a risk of damage to the unborn child need not be feared.

Frequently asked questions
Which Hi5 gloves are tested against sulphuric acid 96%?
According to the data sheet: HI551, HI552, HI553, HI554, HI555, HI556. All are chemical-resistant gloves of PPE category III.
What does the code letter L on the glove mean?
In EN ISO 374-1 the letter L stands for the test chemical sulphuric acid 96%. It appears under the flask symbol if the glove was tested against that substance.
Does the glove protect against every concentration and mixture of sulphuric acid 96%?
No. The test values apply to the substance in the concentration on the test list under laboratory conditions. For other concentrations, mixtures or temperatures there is no test result. The safety data sheet and your risk assessment are authoritative.
What is the workplace exposure limit for sulphuric acid?
According to TRGS 900 (version of 5 June 2026): 0.1 mg/m³ (inhalable fraction). This is an air limit and says nothing about protection on skin contact. The current TRGS 900 and the safety data sheet are authoritative.
My substance is not on the list. What now?
Then there is no test result. That means “not tested”, not “unsuitable”. Tell us the substance, concentration and task; we will check with you using the safety data sheet. You can find more substances in the chemical search.
